Our city is special and therefore subject to many competing elements. Unfortunately, in today’s political climate, our very existence is being threatened. It is more important than ever to elect leaders who support home rule and who will passionately advocate for self-governance.
The reduction and re-allocation of beach parking in residential neighborhoods was critical for public health and safety in the city. The county and state-initiated bill to give development rights to the county to construct a parking garage in our city followed by threats of consolidation or the elimination of island cities is a wake-up call for all coastal cities threatened by growth in the state. Under my leadership, citizens can be assured that my steadfast values and respect for democracy will not succumb to political pressures of special interests, and I will continue to stand strong as a passionate advocate for the city and for the people who live, work, and play here.
Located on a barrier island in the gulf coast, our quality of life in Florida is threatened and our ecosystem is at a tipping point. The waters surrounding our island are at risk due to excess nutrients caused by stormwater runoff, sewage spills, and the Piney Point discharge. The city’s implementation of the “Islanders 4 Clean Water” initiative has been a great success in educating all property owners on what they can do to reduce their impacts on the waters. I am encouraged by the willingness of our citizens and business owners to take the pledge to adhere to the recommendations of the clean water campaign for the benefit of the environment.
Holmes Beach is a great place to visit and an even better place to live. I am a third-generation islander, and I raised my children in this city. My grandchildren currently attend the Island preschool and elementary school. My focus will continue to be on the importance of preserving our community, our character, and our quality of life. Because of this, our residential population is on the rise and am delighted that many of our new residents are young families.
Climate change is real. The city’s key personnel understand the importance of our mitigation efforts to withstand and recover quickly from the effects of sea level rise and the increased frequency and intensity of tropical weather. I will continue to strive for investments in both preparedness and recovery training and in the acquisition of necessary infrastructure and assets to keep our residents safe and our local economy strong. Citizens will continue to benefit from our strong commitment to resiliency by the discounts received in their flood insurance. Mitigation against the threats of climate change and the willingness to adapt will be key in retaining property values and our coastal way of life.
With increased tourism and growth in the county, public safety is our number one objective. Our property owners and visitors can be assured, under my leadership, investments in multi-use paths will continue to be a priority to reduce congestion on our roadways.
